My father gave me this country: SRK

Shah Rukh Khan believes one’s Indian-ness should not be ever questioned.

The actor, whose father was a freedom fighter, told a television channel in an interview, “And that is one thing no Indian should be questioned on because you don’t have to ask and you don’t have to explain why you have to love your motherland.”

He laughs, “I don’t have very many principles, I am a movie star. Maybe I have made compromises in my life and I will never deny that but I know that I have been a good citizen, I pay my taxes, I try to be okay law-wise and then suddenly you are subjected to questioning of this form and I get very emotional about the things that people say…because my parents gave me nothing else.”

The star adds, “I am very proud of the Tamrapatra that my father has and I feel very special, especially with the people of my age group because my father was a freedom fighter, he gave me this country. So, I have this strange positive chip on my shoulder that I really like this. And when somebody asks and says that you are not a nice guy and you are not patriotic enough, I find it very strange.”

Shahrukh Khan speaks on ‘My Name is Khan’. Is it about religion or about romance?

My Name is Khan’, a Shahrukh-Kajol film directed by Karan Johar is the most awaited film of 2010 and it’s almost arrived with the release date of 12th February now only a stone’s throw away. Is the film about religion, a take on the Muslim community and how they are ill-treated or is it about romance between the DDLJ pair?

SRK, in an interview, opens up:

“The film is mainly entertainment. A film normally deals with lots of issues, comedy, or it’s a tragedy or a serious film or a dramatic love story like ‘…Khan’ is meant to be. If one starts talking or deciding on issues before a whole film is seen, it’s kinda not right to do, especially as a filmmaker.

Normally, a film is more than the sum of its parts. It’s not like it’s a love story, it’s got a Karan Johar touch to social cinema, it has an angle of religion, it also has a part of politics, it has a world-shaking incident as a backdrop, it also has a lot of sweet songs. It combines all that.”

So, gear up for the Valentine week and make sure you watch this SRK caper along with your loved ones. It’s surely going to tug at your hearts and give you something to take back home……

Audience knows Shahrukh and Kajol’s worth

When Karan Johar was asked why he has kept the promotion of My Name is Khan such a low key affair, Karan replied he has done maximum marketing for this film when compared to his two films like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.

Meanwhile he also has his own take on affairs when it comes to added hype and buzz around the film.

Karan also has immense trust on Shahrukh Khan and Kajol. He has confidence on audience that they also know worth of such actors. So as a fillmaker he doesnot need to do unnecessary campaign to gain added attention.

‘My Name…’ won’t make a statement: SRK

It has some religion, a bit of politics and it’s set in the backdrop of a world shaking event, but for Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan his latest venture is not so much about Islam post-9/11 as it is entertainment.

“The film is mainly entertainment,” Shah Rukh said in a lengthy interview with IANS over the phone from New York on a trip last week to promote his new film, My Name Is Khan (MNIK), releasing in the US Feb 12.

“If some issue is taken back home, I always tell people if they can take back a little more than an empty pack of popcorn, that’s interesting…that’s an added advantage to an entertaining film.”

Shah Rukh, who plays a Muslim Indian with Asperger’s syndrome living in the US, finding his marriage to a Hindu single mother (played by Kajol) crumbling post-9/11, wouldn’t agree that it’s the Islam angle that is grabbing the most attention in the US.

“A film normally deals with lots of issues, comedy, or it’s a tragedy or a serious film or a dramatic love story like …Khan is meant to be,” he said. “If one starts talking or deciding on issues before a whole film is seen, it’s kinda not right to do, specially as a filmmaker.

“Normally, a film is more than the sum of its parts. It’s not like it’s a love story, it’s got a Karan Johar touch to social cinema, it has an angle of religion, it also has a part of politics, it has a world-shaking incident as a backdrop, it also has a lot of sweet songs. It combines all that.

“To me as a filmmaker, or part of a film, any aspect of the film can only be decided once one has seen the whole film. But there’s no denying that there is an aspect of religion in the film.”

Nor would Shah Rukh look at this and other recent Bollywood films about the fate of Indian Muslims in the US post-9/11 as an effort to redress any negative images people may have formed about Islam over the last nine years.

“Films normally are for entertainment. One doesn’t really make a conscious decision to make a statement with it. Within entertainment, if a statement gets made, it’s really nice for a filmmaker.

“You know, maybe 3 Idiots talks about education, but it’s an entertaining film. Similarly Chak De! India talks about patriotism, but it’s a sports film.

“You can have issues related in a film, but when filmmakers of commercial proportions like Karan, myself and Kajol and all get together, it’s not to highlight an issue because it’s too expensive as a commercial venture to make a film about an issue and not entertain.”

To Shah Rukh, “the most interesting part of the fact as an actor is that I’m playing a character who’s got Asperger’s. It’s also not in any which way to show it in a light which is not nice…but for an actor that’s a great thing to do, you know, to play a (person with a) disorder like this which very few people know about.”

“Hopefully, I’ll be able to convince people about it when they see (the film). I don’t think at least commercial filmmakers from India really make a big-time film which is localised or even localised by an international issue,” he said.

“Commercial we will only know once the film releases,” said Shah Rukh when asked if MNIK isn’t one of Karan Johar’s least commercial offerings so far.

“…Yes, the only thing it has amiss is big set dance pieces, but we just felt with the disorder we were dealing with, it would look very unrealistic for the character Rizwan Khan to indulge in dancing of the order of we normally see in a Hindi film of Karan’s, or you might have seen earlier.

“Except for that, I think the venture is extremely commercial,” he said.

“In the last five years, there’s a whole paradigm shift as to what people accept as a commercial film,” Shah Rukh said describing it as “Karan’s evolution from making and keeping up with the trends of new commercial cinema in India and elsewhere”.

On professional challenges he faced during its filming, Shah Rukh said it was a “very difficult” character to play. “If I was to just put it simply, it’s very seldom that I’ve really gone ahead and played a character which exists in real life.

“And whenever you’re dealing with a disorder or a near…atypical situation, the first thought is that the sort of parameters you have to set that in no which way you are derogatory or deriding the disorder.

“You have to make the protagonist very proud of what it is. The second part is you have to come as close to reality in depicting that characterisation and so one had to study a lot and one does get worried…”

But a couple of people affected with the same disorder who were shown the film had told them “…it’s a great portrayal, it’s very close to someone with this kind of disorder”.

“Of course, having said that, I have taken a few cinematic liberties with it, because I’ve used three or four traits which may not exist simultaneously in one person and tried to create one character who has Asperger’s, called Rizwan Khan.”

My daughter thought we’d have to leave Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan

Even though the occasion was a press conference for the launch of an innerwear product that Shah Rukh Khan endorses, most of the conversation on Saturday revolved around Khan’s latest run-in with the Shiv Sena.

Calling the spat between the party and himself a misunderstanding, Khan said, “Talking about better relationships with another country (Pakistan) doesn’t make me anti-national. I believe it’s wrong to brand an entire nation in a certain way because some of their people are miscreants.” Khan cited the example of a recent case where a nine-year-old Russian girl was sexually molested in Goa. “Would it be right for Russians to think of all Indians as rapists?” he asked.

‘My daughter wanted to know if we’d have to leave Mumbai’
Reiterating his respect for Sena chief Bal Thackeray, Khan said that his ideology was different from that of the Sena’s and that was where the disparity ended.

“However, I stand for what I said and am ready to face the consequences. But it’s not right for my movie to be dragged in because a lot of money and the hard work of more than 250 people have gone into making it,” Khan said, referring to threats from the party that they would stall the release of his film My Name Is Khan in Mumbai if he didn’t apologise for his comments. “Arts, culture and sports bring people, cities and countries together and they should be left free,” said Khan.

Just back from a promotional tour for the film abroad, the actor said he was worried for the safety of his wife and children while he was away.

“I almost feel apologetic to the Mumbai police — they are following me and my family around to make sure we are safe. There are barricades around my house and a lot of policemen are guarding it — it’s not exactly a happy situation to be in. While talking to my daughter on the phone, she asked me if we would be asked to leave Mumbai,” he said.

Clarifying why his team Kolkata Knight Riders did not pick Pakistani player, Abdul Razzaq, Khan said that the decision about who would be picked rested with the team’s think tank — captain Saurav Ganguly and coach Dav Whatmore.

“We were clear we wanted one player, ideally an all-rounder. We were considering Razzaq but were told the night before the auction that he was suffering from a wrist injury. The choice was then between Kemar Roach, from the West Indies, and Shane Bond from New Zealand, and we went with Bond,” said Khan.

No apology, no confrontation with Shiv Sena: SRK

Bollywood’s badshaah Shah Rukh Khan, who has been under fire from the Shiv Sena for favouring Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Saturday said he didn’t owe an apology to the party but was not seeking a “confrontation” either.

“I do not want any confrontation. I am trying to explain myself on every platform,” said Khan at a press conference in Mumbai. In an interview to a TV channel, he said,” I have not said anything that is anti-national.”

After being defiant for days, Shah Rukh made the conciliatory remarks — “If he (Bal Thackeray) wants me to meet him, I will do that” — when he returned from London and was mobbed at the airport by the media seeking his reaction to the Shiv Sena’s tirade against him.

The Shiv Sena has threatened to ban his upcoming release, My Name Is Khan, in Mumbai theatres for his remarks and sought an apology from him. Posters and banners of the movie have been torn.

“I have been misunderstood. Let’s talk it out. I haven’t said anything wrong. I have said what every Indian would have. Today what I am is because of Mumbai. Mumbai has given me everything, my nation has given me everything,” Shah Rukh said at the airport.

“How can I belong to any other nation?,” he added.

Asked if he would go and meet Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray over the issue, Shah Rukh said: “I enjoy Bala Saheb-ji’s company. He is a senior leader. I have been at his place many times, and if he wants me to meet him, I will do that.”

Earlier, Shah Rukh and Kajol came out of the airport separately. Shah Rukh was accompanied by a posse of police personnel and his own private guards, an airport official said.

The duo had gone to the US and Britain for the pre-release promotion of Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan.

Some 500 security personnel, besides nearly 50 of Shah Rukh’s private guards, were at the airport. Director Johar left the airport separately.

Shah Rukh’s vehicle was accompanied by two police vehicles from the airport to his bungalow ‘Mannat,’ facing the Arabian Sea in Bandra West – a distance of around 12 km.

The Maharashtra government and the Mumbai Police have promised to provide full security to theatres and multiplexes where My Name Is Khan would be screened.

Shah Rukh owns the Kolkata Knight Riders team of IPL.

Shahrukh Khan buys first ticket of Ahmedabad Miniplex

Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan today bought first ticket of K Sera Sera’s Miniplex and opened this new venture at S.G.Highway based Gallops mall.

The central Air condition system was off, hand-to-hand scuffle happened between a lensman and bouncers, echo of public address system was so much that entire speech of Shahrukh was literally inaudible, adding to this the mixture of press and non-press persons inside the cramp porch of the mall made Shahrukh’s appearance and media interaction chaotic.

Shahrukh was dressed in black suit, dark blue shinning shirt(two buttons open), a black blazer and dark goggles.

He said his forthcoming film is not about terrorism but it’s a love story with drametic background. He also said that his original surname and film’s title ‘My Name is Khan’ is just coincidence. “If there was any other star in this film, the film’s name would still remain same,” Shahrukh said.

When asked whether he had any plan to meet Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, he replied that he was in Ahmedabad just for his work this time, but in future he would surely like to meet Mr. Modi. Shahrukh also said that he had met Narendra Modi in past(perhaps Shahrukh met Modi in actress Shilpa Shetty’s reception last year).

The mall where Shahrukh inaugurated the new multiplex and also interacted with media was closed for public in the morning to avoid any chaos. Both the roads leading to the mall were closed by organizers and police. Shahrukh recalled he had visited Ahmedabad before 10 years to promote his film Bazigar. He spoke a dialogues of Bazigar, Don, Darr and Devdas amidst cheer of fans and greeted the people gathered there with Gujarati word: “Kem Chho”. Shahrukh said he was suffering from cold and therefore he would sound like Himesh Reshammiya while speaking.
